Peter Westblade Memorial Merino Challenge 2014-2016

The Peter Westblade Memorial Merino Challenge (PWMMC) 2014-2016 is Australia's largest commercial evaluation of Merino genetics being run 20kms outside of Wagga Wagga, in southern NSW.

PWMMC Shearing - 5th & 6th March, 2015 - Wagga Wagga, NSW

The first evaluation shearing of the PWMMC 2014-2016 wethers was held at the Primary Industries Centre - TAFE NSW Riverina Institute on the 5th and 6th March, 2015. 

Each day 25 teams were shorn and more than 150 people visited Wagga Wagga to see merino genetics from across Australia and also see the latest in technology for gathering wool data.   This event focussed on educating young people in the opportunities that exist in the wool industry.  More than 100 Agriculture High School students from across the Wagga Wagga region joined us for the shearing event.

The Challenge Background 

Craig Wilson & Associates developed the PWMMC to assist Merino breeding operations make more informed decisions on their Merino genetics. It has been deliberately designed to show the entrants in the trial and the wider sheep industry the genetic opportunities that exist for them to be more financially sustainable into the future. 


The PWMMC is designed to encompass the various strains and bloodlines of merino sheep. It is unique as it fully examines both wool and meat components of the entrants’ teams.

The Challenge commenced in April 2014, where there are two components a 'Meat Challenge' and a 'Wool Challenge'.  The Meat Challenge is now complete.

The PWMMC is supported by Sally Martin Consulting, Zoetis, Moses & Son, Australian Wool Innovation, Kooringal Horse Stud, Coopers Animal Health, Fletcher International Export, Proway Livestock Equipment, Riverina Co-op, Rabo Bank, Conqueror Milling Company and NSW DPI.
